Ms. Debra Cassens, Interim Editor Dear Ms. Cassens: I recently read the ABA Journal's cover story on Palestinian refugees and their struggle to return to their ancestral homes. I am writing to thank the Journal, and author Jeffrey Ghannam, for this thorough, sensitive and unblinking look at one of the most complicated issues facing both the Palestinians and Israelis as the search for peace continues to elude and as the hope for a just and fair settlement grows more dim. I write to you as a Palestinian born in East Jerusalem. Like many of my fellow Palestinians, when I have talked about and debated the issue of how a Palestinian and Israeli state could co-exist, I have focused primarily on the future of the West Bank and Gaza, and of my birthplace, East Jerusalem. Thank you for reminding me of the injustice that remains for the refugees. As your article makes poignantly clear, no peace plan, now or in the future, will withstand the test of time and fairness if it does not equitably address the refugee problem. I also write as a fellow journalist who is often dismayed by the lack of history, context and research in too much coverage of the Middle East. Unfortunately, most other reporters and publications grant but a cursory peek at the complicated issues of history and law that underpin much of the current crisis. It is impossible to fully understand the conflict--or see a way to a just and peaceful future--without the kind of in-depth reporting and understanding offered by Mr. Ghannams work. HE has done your readers a tremendous service. I hope both he and the ABA Journal continue such outstanding journalism in the future. Sincerely, Mubarak
