Contact Al-Awda New York Al-Awda, The Palestine Right to Return Coalition (PRRC), is a broad-based, nonpartisan, global, democratic association of grassroots activists and organizational representatives. Our objective is to educate the international community to fulfill its legal and moral obligations vis-à-vis the Palestinian people. Al-Awda develops, coordinates, supports and guides, as needed, global and local grassroots initiatives for action related to Palestinian rights. Our advocacy includes the right of Palestinians to return to their homeland, and to full restitution of all their confiscated and destroyed property in accordance with the Universal Declaration of Human Rights, International law and implementation of United Nations Resolutions which uphold these rights. Al-Awda is growing exponentially and has managed significant achievements in a short period of time. We have a general discussion list over 720 members, a network of thousands of activists, and over 35 active action committees ranging from media, events, fundraising, to local action committees spanning the globe (26 action committees in different states in the US). Through key activists with extensive private lists, we have an outreach of over 100,000 email addresses. When messages are forwarded, this is compounded. PRRC organized rallies and marches on September 16 and 17 in the US, UK, Europe, and the Middle East to support the right of return. The US and UK rallies were the best attended ever in the history of Arab activism in those countries (according to someone reliable who has been involved for forty years) and received good media attention. We secured over 150 organizational sponsors' endorsements for the US rally including from the American-Arab Anti-Discrimination Committee (ADC), the Council on American Islamic Relations (CAIR), American Muslims for Jerusalem, The American Committee on Jerusalem, and Amnesty International USA. Since the launching of the recent uprising, PRRC activists organized or cosponsored over 300 demonstrations, vigils, teach-ins etc. which were contributed to or planned by Al-Awda/PRRC local activists. We were active in the media with over 1000 media hits (op-eds, letters to editor published, interviews) on the right of return and on the suffering of the Palestinian people in general. This is the first time a grassroots movement is built around the central Palestinian issue of the right to return from the bottom up and across with complete transparency and democracy. It is analogous to what our people did in the uprising (intifada) with local semi-autonomous committees doing what they feel needs to be done without an institutional hierarchy to dictate to them. Also because this is centered around a main issue that we all agree on, we are not shackled by particular political agendas (all individuals who identify with the right of return can work together regardless of their affiliation).
