Demand Immediate Reopening of Rafah Borders

Update

On August 6, Israeli Occupation Forces allowed people stranded on the Rafah borders to cross into the Gaza Strip. The UN radio reported that the borders were still closed to Palestinians trying to leave the Gaza Strip. The border will continue to be closed for all Palestinians under the age of 35.

We continue to monitor this outrageous situation.

Demand Immediate Reopening of Rafah Borders

28 July 2004
For Immediate Release

Al-Awda, The Palestine Right to Return Coalition is deeply concerned by the humanitarian situation on Rafah's borders which have been completely sealed off for 10 consecutive days by the Israeli occupation army.

According to the Palestine Center for Human Rights and other human rights organizations, and Palestinian and other officials, not a single Palestinian child, woman, man, elderly or sick person has been able to return from Egypt to the Gaza Strip. Denying entry to more than 9000 of the civilian Palestinian population represents another addition to the serious and gross violations of international law and human rights that Israel has been persistently committing.

Al-Awda demands that the US government request Israel reopen the Rafah borders immediately. We urge all people of conscience to contact their congressional representatives by phone, fax and email to demand that their representatives pressure the Bush administration to act.

To find out who your congressional representatives are and their contact information, please go to: http://congress.org/congressorg/home.

TALKING POINTS

  • For 10 consecutive days, the Israeli occupation army has kept closed the Rafah borders.

  • Not a single Palestinian child, woman, man, elderly or sick person has been able to return from Egypt to the Gaza Strip.

  • Freedom of movement is a right Israel continuously and systematically denies to Palestinians.

  • Denying entry to more than 9000 of the civilian Palestinian population represents another addition to the serious and gross violations of international law and human rights that Israel has been persistently committing.

  • Israel's continuing racist efforts to drive the Palestinian people from their homes and lands in order to create a "Jewish Only" entity, must be met with international outrage and actions for its grave violations of fundamental and inalienable human rights.

  • Urge your congressional reps to VOTE AGAINST all US financial support to Israel while Israel continues to engage in a consistent pattern of abuse of fundamental and inalienable human rights.

  • Involving the American people in funding Israeli abuses of international law and human rights is unacceptable. The US should cease all funding to Israel now.
